The term duplex is a derivative of the dual microstructure present in the alloy of these stainless steels. The preference for 2205 duplex steel fasteners stems from the fact that the material exhibits superior corrosion resistance properties with a combination of better toughness and very high strength. Ideally, the use of 2205 Duplex Stainless Fasteners benefits applications that have the need for excellent resistance to corrosion.
The chemical composition of the alloy consists of chromium and nickel, both of which give the Duplex Stainless Steel Fasteners excellent resistance to oxidation corrosion, pitting, and crevice corrosion. Furthermore, by including nickel in its chemistry, the alloy could be used at elevated temperatures. The 2205 duplex stainless steel bolts have resistance to creep at high temperatures, and it does not compromise on its strength, despite exposure to applications where the temperature reaches 300°C.
However, using the fasteners above this temperature is discouraged by many Duplex Fasteners Manufacturers solely because the material undergoes a ductile to the brittle transition phase. During this stage, the duplex 2205 threaded rod loses its ductility and becomes brittle. When the alloy is brittle, it causes material failure, which would, in turn, render the Duplex Stainless Fasteners useless. Although it is possible to remedy this problem. The use of a solution annealing process on the Duplex 2205 Hex Bolts could improve its ductility.
