Austenitic stainless steels tend to exhibit good mechanical properties along with excellent corrosion resistance, making them a suited match for the manufacture of fasteners. The ASTM A193 Grade B8T Bolts or simply referred to as grade B8T is austenitic stainless steel alloy 321. Grade 321 is an alloy that works well in high temperature environments, and so it is not uncommon to see the Stainless Steel ASTM A193 Grade B8T Foundation Bolts in applications that involve very high temperature. At elevated temperatures, conventional alloys become susceptible to intergranular corrosion. The cause of this kind of corrosion is due to the formation of chromium carbide on said materials. 

Yet, in the case of Stainless Steel ASTM A193 Grade B8T Star Washers, the addition of titanium discourages the formation of chromium carbide at temperatures ranging between 800°F to 1500°F. In an austenitic Stainless Steel ASTM A193 Grade B8T Hexagon Nut, the main function of titanium is as a stabilizing element. Titanium, in addition to discouraging the formation of chromium carbide, forms a precipitate of titanium carbides, when combined with carbon. In comparison to either grades 304 or 304L, the creep and stress rupture properties of  Stainless Steel ASTM A193 Grade B8T Plain Washer tends to be much higher.  Moreover, the mechanical properties of an ASTM A193 Grade B8T Hex Head Screw are considered to be good even on exposure to elevated temperatures. In order to improve its strength and to harden the material, the SS ASTM A193 Grade B8T Structural Bolts must be cold worked. It is not possible to harden the ASTM A193 Grade B8T Threaded Stud with the use of any heat treatment.
