Marine grade stainless steel or simply put alloy 316 exhibits excellent resistance to salt solutions. Yet, the content of carbon in the alloy is slightly higher, which might make it susceptible to intergranular corrosion. Specifically, the carbon content of grade 316 has been modified to achieve ASME SA 249 TP316L Stainless Steel Welded Tubing material. This material has properties similar to that of its predecessor.
Yet, the yield strength properties are lost due to the removal of carbon atoms in its chemistry. But the recovery of its yield strength is possible when the alloy of ASME SA249 316L Stainless Steel Tubing has some amount of nitrogen added. The addition of nitrogen improves the functionality of austenitic stainless steel. In the instance of molybdenum-bearing A249 TP 316L Welded straight and U bend tubes, nitrogen acts as an austenite stabilizing agent.
There is a massive improvement in the yield strength properties of the astm a249 tp316l tube with the inclusion of nitrogen. Furthermore, the pitting resistance of the ASTM A249 316L ERW Tubes is much higher than either austenitic stainless steel grade 304 or grade 304L. The alloy also has great resistance to corrosion, especially if the ASME SA 249 TP 316L Tubing has been exposed to conditions that favor corrosion by oxidation. Apart from being used in the marine industry, the use of the ASTM A249 TP316L Tube is not limited to freshwater reserves, particularly if the concentration of chloride ions is high.
