The addition of molybdenum in austenitic stainless steel imparts the components with higher resistance to pitting and to crevice corrosion. The chemistry of an ASME SA269 TP317 Stainless Steel Tube is similar to that of grade 316, with only a slight increase in the content of molybdenum in its alloy. The use of this alloy is particularly helpful in those situations that have a high concentration of ions of chlorides and sulfur in their media.

Ordinarily, both sulfur and chloride rapidly attack steel alloys. However, with an increase in the amount of molybdenum in astm a269 tp 317, the alloys do not buckle under pressure. Like grade 316, the creep properties of ASTM A269 TP 317L Stainless Steel Seamless Pipes are higher than most conventional alloys including stainless steel 304 or 304L. And the alloy also offers resistance from general corrosion across both ends of the temperature spectrum. General or uniform corrosion occurs due to oxidation of the metal, and it quickens its pace if the temperature is elevated. The PREN value, which determines the alloy pitting resistance is higher for ASTM A269 TP 317L Stainless Steel Seamless Tubes as compared to alloy 304 and alloy 316.

The low carbon, nitrogen containing alloy of grade 317 is the astm a269 tp 317l tube. As with the other austenitic stainless steel alloys, the inclusion of nitrogen serves the purpose of increasing the yield strength as well as the resistance to pitting of ASTM A269 TP 317L Stainless Steel Tubes. The corrosion resistance properties, as well as the mechanical properties of both alloy 317l and ASTM A269 TP317 Stainless Steel Pipe, tend to be similar. Yet, in the case of 317L, the lowered carbon content does not permit the formation of carbide precipitates, which would otherwise cause intergranular corrosion in the ASME SA269 TP317L Stainless Steel Tube.
