Grade UNS S32760 is what is referred to as super duplex stainless steel grade. Super duplex stainless steels such as the ASTM A276/ A479 UNS S32760 Round Bar are amongst premium alloys because their mechanical as well as corrosion resistance properties are at a higher level. For instance, the most ideal example of an application of the ASTM A479 UNS S32760 Hex Bar would be in those environments that require resistance to pitting. Unlike the F55 round bar, pitting and crevice corrosion are issues that bother applications that make use of conventional alloys as they have the tendency to deteriorate at a faster rate.
The resistance of any material against pitting is understood by its PREN value. The PREN value of ASTM A276 F55 Duplex Round Bar is more than 40. A value higher than 38 is indicative of superior resistance to pitting. The PREN value of Super Duplex UNS S32760 Bars is higher due to the inclusion of nitrogen in its alloy. Aside from improving its resistance to pitting, the inclusion of nitrogen in the alloy of Zeron 100 Round Bar also brings about an increase in the yield strength of the alloy.
The use of this alloy is advantageous to the marine industry for several reasons. First, the density of the UNS S32760 F55 Rods is considered to be almost 10% lighter than any conventional stainless steel. And so, the cross section could also be reduced to some degree. Furthermore, because the PREN value is high, the ASTM A276 UNS S32760 round bar is able to survive environments that have a high level of sodium chloride salts including brine solutions, seawater, etc.
