Copper nickel alloys are available in various compositions, yet one of the most commonly used compositions would be the 90/10 CuNi. The name of a Copper Nickel 90/10 Round Bar is a derivative of the chemical composition in its alloy. Which in this case indicates that the content of copper in the alloy stands at around 90%, with the content of nickel weighing in about 10% of the total weight of the DIN 2.0872 Square bar. Because the content of copper in the alloy is high, the color of the metal is similar to pure copper, yet the inclusion of nickel dilutes the color.
One of the main reasons as to why the Cu-Ni 90/10 Hex bar is preferred over other alloys is that the color of the metal sets it apart from any other alloy such as stainless steel or pure nickel. Apart from the color of the ASME SB151 Copper Nickel 90/10 bar, which is its physical characteristic, the traits of the alloy are shared by pure nickel as well. For instance, the alloy has good micro-biofouling resistance, and the ASTM B151 Cupro Nickel 90/10 Flat bar also exhibits bacteriostatic behavior.
Hence, it is practically impossible for the alloy to get corroded in marine environments. Generally, marine bio-life such as lichen, moss, algae, etc stick to the surface of any alloy causing them to get discolored, and the chemicals released by them could lead to corrosion of that particular alloy. Yet, these organisms are not able to set their base on the Copper Nickel 90/10 Round Bars, due to its natural antimicrobial properties, thus, making this alloy extremely valuable in marine engineering. In areas that require some amount of conduction behavior, the use of UNS No C70600 Rod is a common sight for said applications.
