Monel 400 or alloy 400 is a solid solution alloy, whose constitution is made up of nickel and copper. While nickel consists of about 67%, the inclusion of copper in the chemistry of Monel 400 Pipe stands at about 23%. As typical for most nickel containing alloys, this grade tends to have high strength even at an elevated temperature. Though the use of the Monel 400 Seamless Pipe is not recommended exceeding a temperature of 1000° F.

The melting point of this monel alloy ranges between  2370° F - 2460° F. A high melting point is indicative of a better dimensionally stable ASTM B165 Alloy 400 Seamless Pipe, especially since high temperatures often cause a change in the molecular flow of the metal, thereby changing its physical appearance. The marine engineering industry prefers the use of ASTM B725 UNS N04400 Welded Pipe for several operational purposes because of its higher copper content. Copper, as an alloyant in components like the Monel alloy 400 Rectangular Pipe is known to offer prolific characteristics including resistance to seawater or brine solutions.

Another feature that makes the 400 Monel alloy Square pipe attractive in the marine industry is that the alloy has a low corrosion rate in rapidly flowing brackish water. These properties in combination with excellent stress related corrosion cracking resistance in many freshwaters sources make the alloy indispensable. Furthermore, the resistance of 400 Monel Hexagonal Pipe to non-oxidizing chloride solutions only increases its utility value amongst consumers. Yet, because the alloy is a copper rich material, many manufacturers and suppliers discourage the use of WERKSTOFF NR. 2.4360 ERW Pipe in processing systems that involve the use of highly corrosive chemicals like nitric acid and ammonia systems, because the alloy undergoes rapid degeneration.

Over 3” OD will be supplied loose. pipes up to 3” OD will be supplied in bundles. Monel 400 Seamless Pipe may be furnished bare or coated and with capped ends. In order to prevent rust during sea shipment, bundles of Monel 400 Seamless Pipe may be wrapped with polypropylene sheets, and secured with flat steel bands.
