Alloy 400, which consists primarily of nickel, is known to have superior resistance to marine environments. Hence, the monel 400 tube manufacturers recommend using this alloy in applications that not only involve marine engineering, but also coastal environments. In coastal regions, the water from the sea that vaporizes often settles on structures that are near the sea. This vapor contains trace amounts of salt, which over time builds up to form a deposition, and the base metal easily gets corroded.

Alloy 400 ERW Tubes are also useful in environments that give off steam when exposed to high temperatures. Due to the addition of 67% nickel in its alloy, the ASTM B163 monel 400 seamless tube could be a part of piping systems where the temperatures reach as high as 1000° F. While the tensile strength of the ASTM B730 UNS N04400 Welded Tubing in an annealed condition is between low to moderate, this property could be increased by the use of various tempers. For instance, supplying the Monel 400 Tube in an as rolled condition increases its tensile strength properties. A technique that may be used to harden the monel alloy 400 high tolerance tubing is cold working.

Since the metal is a solid solution, hardening the Monel 400 Decorative Tube is not possible by the use of heat treatments. The secondary alloyant in the 400 Monel Bright Annealed Tube is copper, which is about 23% the weight of the entire alloy. While copper gives the material good resistance to the marine environment, the presence of this element in din 2.4360 High Pressure Tube makes it vulnerable to solutions that contain nitric acid as well as ammonia systems.
