As with alloy 316, the chemistry of low carbon stainless steel contains chromium, nickel, and molybdenum. An austenitic alloy belonging to the 300 series, the 317L Stainless Steel Seamless Tubes are considered to be a modification over grade 316. The content of molybdenum in this alloy’s chemistry is higher than 3%. This modified molybdenum grade alloy has several important characteristics. For instance, the WERKSTOFF NR.1.4438 Heat exchanger Tube demonstrates greater resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion compared to alloy 316.

Since this alloy contains both chromium and molybdenum the resistance of the Stainless Steel 317L Seamless Tube towards corrosive agents such as chlorides or sulphur containing environments remains one of the most sought after qualities. Just as many low carbon alloys in the 300 series, the ASTM A213 TP 317L Instrumentation Tubes have nitrogen added in their chemistry. Nitrogen is added to such alloys to increase the austenite stability of the alloy. Just like the addition of molybdenum in the SS 317L Cold Rolled Coiled Tubing material, the addition of nitrogen makes it resistant to pitting. One of the risks of lowering the content of carbon in an alloy is that the material tends to lose its tensile strength.

However, when nitrogen is added to low carbon austenitic alloys like ASTM A249 TP 317 Welded Tube, the yield strength gets a boost. Though some of the mechanical properties of the alloy see a decline, the weldability of the UNS S31703 U Tube is on the rise as there are no free carbon atoms that precipitate. Carbide precipitates generally cause hindrance in conventional stainless steels, unlike the SS 317L Welded Tubing.
