Difference between Inconel 800 and Incoloy 800

What Is The Difference Between Inconel 800 And Incoloy 800

The incoloy 800 has 30-35% nickel, 19-23% chromium and other materials such as carbon, aluminum, titanium and up to 39% iron. The inconel 800 also has similar composition. The materials have manganese, silicon, copper, aluminum, titanium, carbon and sulfur. These materials have good resistance to oxidation and carburization processes. These are resistant at intermediate temperatures.
The Inconel products from a stable oxide layer when they are heated.

This allows them to be age hardened and to have high oxidation resistance in the long run. When used over a certain period of time, they Inconel becomes corrosion resistant on the surface due to the patina formation. The incoloy materials have higher iron composition and are cheaper compared to the Inconel products. They are also resistant to corrosion of various materials including steam and acids. These materials are resistant to sea water, sour gas, and brine environments. The chloride ion corrosion resistance is one of the major factors that contribute for the use of incoloy grades in different industrial applications.

Inconel 800 Vs Incoloy 800

The Inconel materials are used in high heat applications and food grade applications. Incoloy and Inconel are registered trademarks for nickel based superalloys. These were produced by the Special Metals Corporation and have different applications. The Inconel are nickel chromium alloys with high oxidation resistance properties. The incoloy material is mostly nickel based can perform under high temperatures as well. Their corrosion resistance is mostly against concentrated acids such as sulfuric acids. Therefore the incoloy material could be used in acid production plants and in chemical applications. The different materials have different type of mechanical properties as well.

The Inconel 800 has about 536MPa minimum tensile strength and 150MPa minimum yield strength at room temperature. The incoloy 800 has 600MPa minimum tensile strength and 275MPa minimum yield strength. The incoloy material is stronger than the icnonel and therefore it could be used in high strength applications. The elongation at break for incoloy is at 45%. The density of incoloy 800 is also high with 7.94 grams per cubic centimeter. These materials could have the additions of molybdenum, copper, silicon and nitrogen in varying quantities based on the different grades.

Both these materials are used to produce bars, rods, pipes, tubes, flanges, fittings and other types of products for use in different applications. These can be welded with most common welding procedures given the right filler material is used. The forming operations are easy to carry out as they posses good ductility. Hot working and cold working are possible on these materials with the standard tools. They can be heat treated and annealed to improve the hardness. The applications can also include sheathing, heating element, nuclear steam tubes, heat exchangers, boilers, super heater and in carburizing equipment.
