The application of tensile stress onto highly ductile alloys could cause them to crack under tension. This type of failure is referred to as SCC or stress related corrosion cracking. Generally, materials such as stainless steel grade 304 or grade 316 that contain austenite in their microstructure tend to be really ductile, which means they are prone to SCC. Similar to grade 304 or 316, which belong to the austenitic class of stainless steels, the Super Duplex UNS S32750 Bolts, which is classified as a duplex class alloy, contains 50% of its microstructure as austenite crystals.
However, the other half of the SDSS UNS s32750 Fasteners ASTM a276/ a479 uns s32750 Threaded Rod microstructure consists of ferrite, which is a harder crystal. Hence, the rate of SCC occurring in this alloy is significantly lower, despite exhibiting ductility. Furthermore, heat treatments performed on the alloy used to make Astm A479 SDSS UNS S32750 Hex Bolts increase their toughness. So their deformation under stress remains minimal. SCC is specifically found in environments that contain very high levels of chlorine.
Chlorine induced SCC adversely affects conventional stainless steels such as grade 304, unlike Super Duplex Steel Uns S32750 Hex Cap Screw. Since the alloys used in these environments would ultimately give in to failure by Chlorine induced SCC, manufacturers designed the Asme Sa 479 S32750 Heavy Hex Bolt to be employed in environments that contain chlorine and its derivative products as a safety measure against failure to stress related corrosion cracking.
